The Perks of Peppermint

One of the most commonly used essential oils in my house is peppermint. We use this oil daily for many different things. In college I remember using this oil often to soothe my allergies and keep my sinuses clear. Our residence halls were super old so this oil seriously kept me going. What is peppermint oil, you ask? Peppermint is one of the oldest and widely used herbs for treating a myriad of ailments - stomach issues, enhancing taste, & relieving pain are just a few examples. Here are six uses for peppermint oil, and why YOU should start using this oil today:

1) Stomach Issues

Peppermint oil is widely known to help with stomach issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indigestion, & bloating. Peppermint is anti-inflammatory and helps relax the muscles in the GI tract. This relaxing helps decrease the length and severity of both abdominal and gastrointestinal pain. It also stimulated the flow of 💩 resulting in the breakdown of fats and food passing through the gut more efficiently! Dilute and apply this oil topically in a clockwise motion around the abdomen. I’ve had some horrible stomach probs in my day and I have even put a drop in a glass of water, tea, or coffee to improve digestion and ease discomfort ☕️ Also, peppermint oil has been known to trigger the sensation of fullness after meals due to its ability to directly affect the brains satiety center. WOAH.


2) Other Healing

Aside from helping tummy probs, peppermint oil can assist with healing much more! Massage peppermint onto the temples and back of the next to relieve headaches. Have a fever? Rub peppermint on the soles of your feet. Struggling with a cough? Peppermint has decongestant properties that help clear chest congestion through the thinning of mucus. Just rub some peppermint oil onto the chest area and you’ll soon have a much more productive cough 😷 Peppermint also helps relieve pain. Joint pain, throat pain, arthritis, and even pain from sunburns can be soothed with this oil. Peppermint’s antiviral properties also help fight viral, fungal, and respiratory infections! My husband gets pretty bad cold soars and, as an athlete, has struggled with athletes foot. This oil has been used in our home to fight BOTH these problems with amazing results! 👏🏼


3) Springtime Woes

Spring is one of my absolute FAVORITE seasons. I love the weather, the pretty colors, and the promise of new life blossoming all around me. Two things that keep me from fully embracing spring are allergies and bugs 🤧 Jordan had the WORST allergies. Luckily, peppermint oil helps bring relief. Put a drop of peppermint in some local honey, and by relaxing the nasal passages and acting as an expectorant, this oil will relieve sinus symptoms. Taking peppermint oil this way also provides relief for itchy eyes. regarding bugs, peppermint oil has A strong smell that many bugs, including mosquitos, ants, and moths, do not like 🦟 Using this oil topically will keep pesky bugs away and allow you to enjoy the outdoors all season long 🏕


4) Beauty Purposes

Peppermint oil is super useful in the world of beauty and cosmetics 💋 It nourishes dull skin making it brighter and improves the texture of oily skin. This oil also works as a great toner and its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties work to aid and control acne. Put a few drops of peppermint oil in your shampoo to stimulate hair growth or cure dandruff 💇‍♀️


5) Pregnancy Symptom Relief

Peppermint oil was such an incredible oil when I was pregnant. This oil helped calm so many of those miserable pregnancy symptoms 🤰 Peppermint is a carminative herb which helps relieve nausea and works wonders at calming feelings of morning sickness; just rub it directly onto the abdomen for relief. Another struggle during pregnancy is having super itchy skin. Use this oil in your mosturizer and apply to the skin to help cool and soothe irritated skin and prevent excessive itching. Like I said earlier, peppermint helps a ton with indigestion. Putting a drop of peppermint into a cup of tea reduces heartburn and acid reflux symptoms. I also used peppermint oil in my foot soak to help relax and ease sore, tired feet 👣


6) Energy & Alertness

Peppermint oil does wonders for stimulating the conscious mind 🧠 Diffusing peppermint oil has been known to promote alertness, improve concentration, increase memory, and enhance mental clarity. It also helps attention, performance, and focus. Peppermint oil can be ingested as well as massaged onto the shoulders and back of the neck to increase energy levels. Peppermint is also a great oil to use in the bath to help with depression and sadness and promote a good nights sleep 😴
